What makes this route

Horses, high passes, hot springs.

Six days that move from the old Silk Road to the high pastures of Jyrgalan — riding at the pace of a walking horse, driving where the road runs out, and ending at a table full of Kyrgyz bread.

Turnaluu-Kol on horseback

Ride through the green pastures of Jyrgalan to Crane Lake at 2,670 m, guided by a local herder and his horses.

Soviet 4x4 to Altyn-Arashan

A UAZ of another era carries you up rough tracks into a valley ringed by forest and 4,000-metre peaks.

Zhashyl-Kol, the hidden lake

A clear alpine lake few travellers ever reach — approached only on horseback, across quiet high pastures.

Hot springs at Ak-Suu

Soak in the natural hot springs on the way down from Altyn-Arashan, with the mountains standing right above you.

The red cliffs of Jeti-Oguz

The Seven Bulls glow copper above the valley — a short, dramatic walk with one of Kyrgyzstan's best views.

A Kyrgyz evening with a family

Roll the dough, bake the bread and share the table the way Kyrgyz families have done it for generations.

Day by day

Six days, two lakes on horseback.

The route of the classic Karakol adventure: from the Silk Road towers of Burana to the high pastures of Jyrgalan, into the Altyn-Arashan valley by 4x4, and home again along the northern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Bishkek to Karakol via Burana Tower

Bishkek · Burana Tower · Karakol

Leave Bishkek in the morning and follow the eastern shore of Issyk-Kul, the great blue bowl of the Tian Shan. Pause at the 11th-century Burana Tower, raised by a Silk Road trading town, then climb into the mountains to Karakol — a town of tall poplars, carved wooden balconies and felt handicrafts. Check in, look out of the window, and let the mountains come to you.

Horseback Riding to Turnaluu-Kol Lake

Jyrgalan Valley · Turnaluu-Kol

After breakfast, drive into the Jyrgalan Valley — wide green pastures framed by snowy ridges and still home to horse herders. Your local guide brings out his horses, and you ride up the mountain trails to Turnaluu-Kol, the Crane Lake, at 2,670 m. Take your time by the water; in the warmer months, cranes and other birds gather along the shore. Then ride back to Karakol for dinner and an easy evening at the hotel.

Soviet 4x4 Adventure to Altyn-Arashan

Altyn-Arashan Valley · Ak-Suu

After breakfast, climb into a Soviet-era 4x4 — the UAZ that still does the work here — and bounce up a rough track into Altyn-Arashan Valley. Forest, scree slope and a wall of snowy peaks open ahead of you, and the silence is the loudest thing about it. On the way back, stop at the natural hot springs in Ak-Suu for a long soak, then back to the hotel for dinner.

Horseback Riding to Hidden Zhashyl-Kol Lake

Zhashyl-Kol Lake · High pastures

After breakfast, ride out to Zhashyl-Kol, a clear alpine lake that few travellers ever reach. The trails cross quiet high pastures far from the main routes, and the lake appears between the ridges like something kept secret. Stop for photographs, breathe the cold clean air, then ride back down to Karakol for dinner and a restful night.

Jeti-Oguz, Karakol City and a Traditional Kyrgyz Evening

Jeti-Oguz Gorge · Karakol · Family kitchen

Start slow at the red cliffs of Jeti-Oguz, the Seven Bulls, where the rock faces glow copper against the morning sky. Back in Karakol, walk the old streets, the Dungan church and the bazaar, and see the carved balconies the town is known for. Then the evening belongs to the kitchen: roll out the dough, shape the traditional Kyrgyz bread, and share the table with your host family — warm, generous and loud with conversation.

Grigorievka and Semenovka Gorges to Bishkek

Issyk-Kul north shore · Bishkek

After breakfast, take the northern shore road west. At Grigorievka and Semenovka the highway narrows into gorges of spruce, tumbling rivers and wet alpine meadows — cool, green relief after the dry peaks around Karakol. Take a last look across the range, then continue to the capital, where you are dropped at your own pre-booked hotel. The road is long, and every kilometre of it is worth seeing.
